Yummm...Pumpkin!!!
Friday, November 16, 2012
Hello again to all our faithful followers. Here is an update on life at Howlers Inn. First and foremost, everyone is still with us – grumpy old men included! They are still alive and kickin, though more slowly and with more pain than before.
It is hunting season and right now all the wolves are enjoying the bounty this season brings. Chris and I have been making trips to a local processing outfit and collecting carcasses, heads and hides. They have had a mix of elk and deer. While the wolves don’t seem to have a preference, we prefer the deer simply because they are so much easier to haul around! The heads continue to be a favorite keep away toy for the younger pack, while the hides are great for tug-of-war.
Recently, we also gave the packs some pumpkins just to see what they would do with them. Low and behold, they loved them! Sekani snagged the first one we put out and she pierced it with her teeth, picked it up and ran off with it. The brothers really wanted in on the action, but she growled whenever they got near. Eventually, she did share a little and it was fun watching the three of them. After eating most of the flesh, they enjoyed rolling around in what was left. With that success, we gave both packs more pumpkins (left over from our jack-o-lanterns). That’s a photo of Chief enjoying his pumpkin. Since the photo was taken we have had a couple of bouts of snow and our vistas are pretty much white these days. We have some warmer weather ahead and we are praying that some of the snow is able to stick around.
Our vet of many years recently closed her practice, so we had to find a new vet willing to care for a bunch of wolves. Luckily, a wonderful vet , who has experience with wolves, was up for the challenge, so we now use 360 Pet Medical and Dr. Chris Kenyon. We are pleased with the new arrangement, but hope we don’t need their services for awhile yet!
Happy Thanksgiving to all of you. You are all a blessing to us and we are grateful for your presence in our lives.
